About Maya Indian Missions
|
Who are the Maya Indians in Komchen, Yucatan and the surrounding villages? They are simple people with needs we take for granted. Needs for a basic education, medical care, and adequate nutrition and sanitation. Many individuals live in structures put together by cardboard and stones. Most work in Maquiladora factories owned by Americans and are paid less than $4 a day. The level of their poverty is clear when one learns that toilets are practically nonexistent.
We cannot change the whole world . . . We can enlighten people in parishes in the United States about conditions in the Yucatan and why they need your help.

"We feel the scholarship program is absolutely invaluable and life changing for all involved.
It is our observation that in spite of hardships, challenges and struggles, it is well worth it all. Maya Indian Missions is a great adventure for God and God's people!"

In 1986 an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, Father William Auth, arrived in the Yucatan to learn some Spanish so he could minister to Hispanics in the United States. Fr. Bill landed in Komchen where he lived and gradually got to know and love the Maya people.
Fr. Bill today continues to work with the Mayan people in Komchen and five surrounding villages. Through the years the staff, systems, and finances have been strengthened. A Board of Directors was established in the United States and a Mexican Board, "Ayudar es Compatir" oversees this non-profit Mission in the Yucatan.
