ARE YOU SAFE IN MEXICO?   (Part Three – last in a series )

First, it was the violence and the drug cartel, then the Flu Virus and now what?

The drug cartel and the flu virus didn't bother me half as much as what is happening now.  I don't know if I can take it much longer.  It just keeps getting worse. God Help Me!  What did I ever do to merit this?

I'm talking about the weather!   You might laugh but it has been over 45 degrees here for several days in a row.  That is Centigrade which translates into Fahrenheit around 110 or higher.  I'm afraid to look at the thermometer because if I do, I run to the shower and try to get a little cooler.  You would think after 20 years, I would be accustomed to this heat, but I'm not.  So I try to go a little slower and stay in the shade.

But I will be leaving next Monday for the States.  Prices have gone up quite a bit with the airlines, so I take a bus for five hours to Cancun and then another bus to the airport and on to Detroit.  It makes for a long day, and lots of reading. I hear they are taking everyone’s temperature on the bus and then again at the airport.  If you don't hear from me until September you will know I am in quarantine in some nice fancy hotel in Cancun.  Oh the life of a Missionary!

I will include the schedule of my Mission Appeals in Michigan, Ohio and California for this summer.  After a reunion with my brother Oblates in Detroit, I will be on the road speaking about the Maya and the many ways in which you have helped us make this world a little better place.

We had a meeting of the Maya Mexican Board of Directors last night and reviewed the many projects we have worked on these last few months.  We are trying to form small groups in each of the pueblos.  Some of those groups have taken off and the people are enthusiastic about getting together.  Other groups are struggling, with only one or two people coming.  We have two new groups of youth – one in Sierra and one in Cosgaya.

This last Monday I had a meeting with Alberto, our English Teacher.  We hope to continue the School we started 10 years ago in Komchen and also add a class of English Students in Sierra Papacal this coming fall.  More than 80 young people received scholarships this last year so they could continue their education. They will sign up soon for the fall semester.  If you would like to sponsor one of these students, please let me know.  Information is on our website at:  Mayamissions.com or feel free to send me an email at:  wgauth@juno.com or call me in Michigan at 517 688 4098.

I hope to see many of you this summer.  I hope you can make it to one of the sites I list below.  These visits give me the strength to continue and I hope they help you understand the needs of the Maya and how important you are.

Have a great Summer.  Hasta La Vista.

Bill
